What is the significance of any town's renaming?

The case of St Petersburg is interesting. It became Leningrad and is now St Petersbug again ? Saigon is now Ho Chi Minh City. Tananarive is again Antananarivo, the city of a thousand warriors. Bombay is now Mumbai. But Los angeles remained Los Angeles even after California became American.
